How to add a buying rule

How to add a buying rule

Buying rules are hard exclusions — if a listing matches a rule, it never appears on your shortlist. Think of them as the filters you would apply manually on every platform, applied automatically across CarWow, Motorway, BCA, and Manheim in one place.

You describe rules in plain English. Reco turns your text into structured rules and applies them before recommendations are generated.

You need at least one connected integration before buying rules have any stock to filter.

Step-by-step

  1. Sign in and go to Settings → Buying rules in the sidebar.
  2. In the text box, describe what you want to exclude. For example:
    • No red Vauxhalls and nothing over 100k miles
    • No Vauxhalls
    • Only cars under £5k
  3. Click Create rule (or press Cmd+Enter on Mac / Ctrl+Enter on Windows).
  4. Your new rules appear under Your rules, newest first. Recently added rules show a Recently added badge for 48 hours.

When it works

Rules save automatically — you do not need to click a separate Save button. After saving:

  1. Reco runs a background refresh of your recommendations.
  2. Matching listings are removed from your shortlist.
  3. Updated results appear on your Recommendations page, usually within a few minutes.

Rules that work well

Buying rules handle common exclusions reliably:

  • Make and model — e.g. "No Vauxhalls", "No BMWs"
  • Colour — e.g. "No red cars", "No white vans"
  • Mileage — e.g. "Nothing over 100k miles", "Under 50k miles only"
  • Price — e.g. "Only cars under £5k", "Nothing over £15k"

When it does not work

Sometimes part of your request cannot be turned into a rule. Here is what you will see and what to do.

Partial parse

If some phrases are understood and others are not, the valid rules are still added. Amber Could not include chips list the phrases that could not be parsed. Try rephrasing those parts and creating a separate rule.

No rule created

If nothing in your text could be parsed, you will see a message: "No rule could be created from that text". Try simpler wording — one concept per rule often works better than combining many criteria in a single sentence.

Advanced rules

Some criteria are harder to express in plain English, including:

  • Engine size or specific derivatives
  • Body type (e.g. "no estates")
  • Feature requirements (e.g. "must have sat nav")

For these, message our team via Need help? in the sidebar (after signing in) or email team@recoengine.co.uk. We can set up advanced rules on your account.

Removing a rule

To delete a rule, click Remove next to it in Your rules. The change saves immediately and your shortlist refreshes in the background.

You can add and remove rules at any time as your stock focus changes. For gradual refinement based on what you like and dislike, see how to refine your results.
